What L-Theanine Is

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea leaves, Camellia sinensis, along with a handful of mushroom species. It accounts for a meaningful proportion of the amino acid content of green tea and contributes to its characteristic savoury, umami quality.

Structurally it resembles glutamate, and its studied mechanism involves modulating glutamate and GABA activity in the brain. It can cross the blood-brain barrier, and the effect associated with it is a calm, settled and alert state rather than sedation — which is often invoked to explain why tea feels different from coffee despite both containing caffeine.

Traditional Use of L-Theanine

L-theanine itself was isolated by Japanese researchers in 1949, so the compound is modern. Its traditional context is the tea it comes from, and that context is deep: tea has been central to Chinese and Japanese culture for well over a millennium.

Particularly relevant here is tea's role in contemplative practice. Zen Buddhist monks used tea to sustain alert calm through long meditation, and the Japanese tea ceremony grew from that tradition. Whether or not L-theanine explains it, the association between tea and a settled, focused state is very old.

Green tea's higher L-theanine content, particularly in shade-grown leaves such as gyokuro, reflects cultivation practices developed for flavour long before the chemistry was understood.

Research Context for L-Theanine

L-theanine has a moderate but reasonably consistent research base. Human trials have examined it for stress, anxiety, sleep quality and attention, generally reporting modest reductions in subjective stress and some effects on measures of relaxation. Doses in that research typically range from about 100 mg to 400 mg.

There is no meaningful body of research linking L-theanine to lung function or respiratory outcomes, and it would be misleading to imply otherwise. Its relevance here is indirect: stress demonstrably affects breathing patterns, pushing them faster, shallower and higher into the chest, and stress-related breathing habits are a real if non-medical phenomenon.

So the connection is plausible rather than demonstrated. As with every component, the amount included is not disclosed.

Two things to mention to a pharmacist.
