What Vitamin D3 Is

Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is the form of vitamin D produced in skin exposed to ultraviolet B light and the form found in animal foods such as oily fish, egg yolk and liver. It is the form generally preferred in supplements, being somewhat more effective than D2 at raising blood levels.

Despite the name it functions more like a hormone than a vitamin. After conversion in the liver and kidneys it acts on receptors present in tissues throughout the body, including immune cells and the respiratory epithelium — which is the basis of its inclusion in a lung wellness formula.

Research Context for Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is among the most researched nutrients in existence, and the respiratory literature is substantial. Observational studies consistently associate lower vitamin D status with higher rates of respiratory infection. Meta-analyses of supplementation trials have reported modest protective effects against acute respiratory infection, with the benefit concentrated in people who were deficient to begin with.
