Quercetin has a substantial research literature, and the honest summary is that it is extensive but not conclusive. Laboratory and cell studies consistently demonstrate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Human trials have examined it for exercise performance, blood pressure, allergic rhinitis and respiratory infection, with mixed and often modest results.
The recurring obstacle is bioavailability. Quercetin is poorly absorbed and rapidly metabolised, so the concentrations that produce striking effects in a petri dish are difficult to achieve in human tissue. Formulations attempt to address this in various ways, and human trials commonly use several hundred milligrams daily to compensate.
